The Sign Variation process typically takes approximately 8 weeks from the time you submit your application. The process includes the following steps:

Pre-Application meeting
Schedule a meeting with Village Staff to discuss your project and familiarize yourself with the Variation Process. -
Submittal of Application & Plans
You’ll be required to submit the Sign Variation Application through the villages new portal for online permits and development review application. The new OpenGov portal will be a one stop shop for zoning approvals, land development permits and building permits. Please apply for the sign variance using the new Opengov Development Review Application. Other requirements include a fee along with 15 copies of your proposed sign, building elevations (if a wall sign), a Plat of Survey, a location map, and photographs of all existing signs at the subject property.The deadline for submission is 12 p.m. every Monday. Once you submit an application, you'll be scheduled for the Zoning Board of Appeals approximately 3 weeks later.

Staff Review
Once your application has been submitted, Staff will review your plans and prepare a report summarizing the project and Staff’s recommendation for your project. You will receive a copy of this report prior to the Zoning Board of Appeals public hearing. Depending on your request, Staff may provide a negative or positive recommendation for your project. -
Zoning Board of Appeals
Hearings for the Zoning Board of Appeals are held every Wednesday. At your scheduled public hearing, the Zoning Board of Appeals conducts a review of the application. Anyone present from the public is allowed to speak on your project. The Zoning Board of Appeals makes a recommendation to Village Board. -
Village Board Action
Village Board has final approval of any sign variation request. If your request is approved, Village Staff prepares an ordinance documenting approval of the project. Village Board may include special conditions as part of approval/denial of your project. -
Permits
If you receive approval of your proposed sign, you may submit a Sign Permit Application for installation of the sign. Your sign permit application will not be reviewed until Village Board has approved the request. determination. For more information, please see the Sign Permit Resource Guide.
