Applications for the firefighter/paramedic eligibility list are currently closed.

Salary Range: $73,259 -$79,323

The Board of Fire and Police Commission has created an eligibility list for Firefighter/Paramedic. This list will be valid for 2 years or until exhausted. 

Candidates must complete the necessary Public Safety Self-Assessment as well as the Fire Team Exam through National Testing Network.

Candidates must also fill out an online application with the Village of Schaumburg


 

The Schaumburg Fire Department is the second largest municipal fire department in Cook County.  Over 10,000 Fire Suppression, Emergency Medical Service (EMS), and Rescue calls are handled by our five fire stations and 120 personnel. The Department operates three shifts of approximately 40 members to provide services to the community.

Our firefighters work with the state of the art apparatus and equipment which is supported by full time staff members in EMS, Training and Logistics. The department also maintains several specialty teams which include Technical Rescues, Dive, Hazardous Materials and Fire Investigation.

Schaumburg Fire Department also interacts with the community by providing a variety of programs such as fire and accident prevention education, hosting a Fire Explorer Program and providing CPR instruction classes. The Schaumburg Fire Department offers the best opportunities for employment and advancement in the Fire Service.

Hiring Process

(The Board of Fire and Police Commission reserves the right to terminate any applicant at any point in the hiring process):

  1. Schedule and complete the Public Safety Self Assessment and FireTeam Exam through National Testing Network prior to the application deadline
  2. Complete an application with the Village of Schaumburg Firefighter/Paramedic application online
  3. Polygraph Exam
  4. Interview with the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners
  5. Background Investigation
  6. Psychological Exam
  7. Physical Exam

 What you’ll need to provide when you apply:

  • A copy of your valid driver’s license
  • At time of application must provide current certification that you successfully passed the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT – Plus), as licensed and approved by the International Association of Firefighters and shall have a date not to exceed one year
  • A copy of a certified transcript of course work obtained from an accredited College or University attached to your application

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the education requirements required for applicants?

Applicants must have obtained at least 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university at the time of the written exam. Evidence of such (official transcript) must be provided when requested by the Board.

Are there any exceptions to the age requirements?

Applicants shall be under 35 years of age, at the time of application and at such time as the final eligibility list is posted, unless exempt from such age limitation as provided in Section 5/10-2.1-6 of the Fire and Police Commissioner’s Act. Applicants, at such time as they file their application with this board, must be 21 years of age. Proof of birth date will be required at time of application.

Are there any factors that may disqualify a candidate?

The Board may refuse to examine an applicant or, or examination, to certify him/her as ineligible.

  1. Who is physically unable to perform the duties of the position to which he or she seeks appointment.

  2. Who is addicted to the use of drugs or intoxicating beverages or is found to have taken or used drugs and/or narcotics illegally.

  3. Who has been convicted of a felony or any misdemeanor involving moral turpitude, as specified in of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners Act.

  4. Who has been dismissed from any public service for just cause.

  5. Who has attempted to practice any deception or fraud in his or her application. A false statement knowingly made by a person in an application for examination, connivance in any false statement made in any certificate which may accompany such application or complicity in any fraud touching the same, including the interview.

  6. Who may be found disqualified in personal qualifications or health.

  7. Whose character and employment references are unsatisfactory.

  8. Who, if applying for a position as a firefighter or firefighter/paramedic, does not possess a Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) certificate at time of application and time of job offer.

  9. Who, if applying for a position as a firefighter/paramedic, has not obtained at least 60 credit hours from an accredited College or University.

  10. Who in the judgement of the commission has not successfully completed the examinations described in Chapter III of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners Rules and Regulations.

Any applicant deemed disqualified hereunder, shall be notified by the Board.

What if candidate's application is deemed defective?

At the discretion of the Board, defective applications can be returned for correction, or the applicant can be disqualified.
