Responsibilities

The Village of Schaumburg is responsible for providing snow and ice control for 208.5 centerline miles of streets and 431 cul-de-sacs. Although residents are responsible for plowing, blowing or shoveling driveways, parkways and public sidewalks adjoining their homes, they are not required to do so. If there are any concerns or questions related to snow and ice, please dial 311 in Schaumburg or create an online Customer Service Request (CSR).

Roads that are Maintained by other Agencies

While village crews plow the majority of Schaumburg roads, some roads are the responsibility of other local agencies. List of roadways and contact information.

Do not Blow or Shovel Snow into the Street

Blowing or shoveling snow into the street causes dangerous ice patches while prolonging the snow and ice removal efforts. It is also a violation of village code.

Parking after Snowstorms

It is unlawful to park on any public street after two inches of snow has fallen. Village residents may dial 311 with questions. Outside the village, the public can call 847-895-7100.

Mailboxes

If a village plow or truck damages a mailbox through direct contact, the mailbox will be repaired or replaced with a standard type mailbox in accordance with established guidelines. The village cannot replace decorative mailboxes. A standard design will be used for all mailbox replacements. A property owner who installs decorative materials on the parkway does so at his or her own risk. If it is believed a mailbox was damaged through direct contact, it is imperative that residents dial 311 or create an online Customer Service Request (CSR) to report the damage. Parkway Damage

If your parkway has been damaged by village snow and ice equipment, dial 311 or create an online Customer Service Request (CSR). Parkway repairs usually begin in April, weather permitting and are processed in the order they were received. View parkway repair information.

Fire Hydrants

Fire hydrants need to be accessible at all times. During heavy snowstorms, crews are not available to clear out fire hydrants and mailboxes. Residents are encouraged to shovel snow to provide access to hydrants and mailboxes on or around their property.

Help Others in Need

Some residents have disabilities or health risks and are unable to shovel heavy snow. Please help neighbors who need assistance in clearing the heavy snow from driveways and sidewalks. Residents unable to shovel should seek out help from a neighbor, family member, or hire a landscape/snow removal company to remove snow from their driveway. Village crews are responsible for plowing streets and village-owned parking lots only. Equally important is keeping sidewalks clear adjacent to properties along school routes, parks and recreation centers for the safety of school children and pedestrians. Please take time to shovel the sidewalk along your property or within your complex.

Blocked Driveways

It is impossible for village crews to avoid plowing snow in front of driveways. In fact, open driveways attract the snow as curbside snow banks increase in height from multiple storms. The process of plowing requires multiple passes down a street to plow the entire road. Please do not block the roadway or approach the truck to avoid snow plowed into the driveway. These actions are dangerous and only prolong the road clearing process. You might want to wait for the road to be completely cleared so that you only shovel once. This can cause heavy piles of snow in front of driveways during heavy snowstorms. Residents are encouraged to shovel several times throughout a heavy snowstorm.
