Community Solar
What is Community Solar?
A community solar project is a single site solar installation located in Illinois that is shared by multiple subscribers. Each subscriber receives credits (termed “net metering credits”) for their share of the electricity generated by the community solar project. These net metering credits reduce the amount of electricity charged to the subscriber’s account each month to yield cost savings. With community solar, subscribers can reduce their monthly electric bills with solar without installing solar panels on their house or business.
How does Community Solar Work?
Community solar projects generate electricity, and that power is delivered into the electric grid of the utility. The community solar project enrolls subscribers, and each subscriber receives monthly net metering credits based on the size of their subscription and how much the community solar project generates. Each subscription is tied to a specific community solar project.
What are the Benefits?
When Schaumburg residents join, they will save 10% of the community solar credits for their share of solar generation credits achieved. There is no fee to enroll in the program, and there are no upfront or hidden costs. No credit check or minimum credit score is required. You can opt out at any time without penalties. The 10% net metering savings retained by the participant is set for all contract periods and will not be reduced.
Community Solar is an easy way to support clean energy generation located within Illinois. Supporting these types of projects helps reduce the dependence on fossil fuels and support clean energy generation. In addition, you do not have to invest in solar panels on your rooftop, which may not be right for everybody.
Who is Eligible?
Eligible accounts include all residential accounts and small commercial accounts with a peak demand of less than 100kW. Residents that have rooftop solar panels on their homes may participate. If they normally consume 10,000 kWh per year, and their solar array generates 8,000 kWh per year, their community solar subscription could cover the remaining 2,000 kWh per year.
If you have rooftop solar panels and would like to know if you qualify for the program, contact MC Squared Energy Services at 833-970-3552.
How does Billing Work?
After successfully completing the enrollment process, the net metering credits based on your subscription, will appear on your monthly utility bill, and will be credited against your total electricity utility supply costs. Then, after you have received your net metering credits from ComEd, MC Squared Energy Services, LLC will bill your credit card for 90% of the net metering credits - leaving you with 10% of all net metering credits. You will also be able to see how your participation helps the environment each month!

The Village of Schaumburg is participating in the SolSmart program funded by the U.S. Department of Energy SunShot Initiative, which helps local governments reduce barriers to solar energy growth and make it easier for homes and businesses to go solar.
Schaumburg has achieved the Silver level designation in the SolSmart program indicating the village is “open for solar business.” The village streamlined its permit and plan review process, and updated its Solar Energy Code to encourage the use of solar energy as a renewable energy resource. New solar energy systems reduce energy demand and the use of fossil fuels, create jobs and help Schaumburg achieve the goals of the Comprehensive Green Action Plan.
Refer to Schaumburg’s commercial and residential Solar Energy Systems Resource Guides for information about permits and the application and inspection processes.
