Recycling
Millions of tons of recyclables end up in landfills each year. In addition, household hazardous waste continues to contaminate the land and water. Recycling is one way to help reduce waste and pollution.
Please expand the menu below to find answers to many common questions about recycling as well as recycling opportunities.
Existing Homes/Resale
Residents do not need to contact the hauler to set up recycling service; it is automatically set up by the village. If there are not hauler provided garbage carts and you would like garbage carts from the hauler please fill out the "Service Enrollment or Change Request form" on the LRS Website, or call LRS customer service at 844-633-3577.
New Construction
Call the Engineering and Public Works Department at (847) 923-6612 to get your home setup for recycling service.
The village offers residents a free single-stream curbside recycling program in which all kinds of recyclables are mixed together. Reduce and Reuse
Reducing is easier than most people think and it makes sense. Do not purchase an excess of any item i.e. food, building material, paint, and other items. Look for other ways to reduce - join carpool, turn off a light, fix a leaky faucet, and borrow something you need to use from a friend.
Items can be reused when repaired, refurbished, or donated. Selling unwanted items can also reduce. The reuse of products when possible is even better than recycling because the items do not need to be reprocessed before they can be used again.

Household hazardous waste is found in each and every home. Most of these items are products that are used for cleaning, controlling insects, improving plants and grass, or for various other home improvement/repair projects. The labels on these products often contain words such as flammable, corrosive, reactive and even toxic. Household hazardous waste cannot be disposed of in regular refuse; it must be handled safely and disposed of in a manner that will not result in environmental exposure. It is strongly suggested that consumers take the time to read labels to better understand how to properly dispose of household hazardous waste. When using a hazardous material, purchase only the amount needed to complete a job.

Styrofoam recycling can be costly as the material is lightweight, bulky, and difficult to clean – which are some of the reasons why foam recycling is less commonplace. At this time, the village’s garbage and recycling provider, LRS, does not offer Styrofoam recycling. However, there are Styrofoam recycling locations that are open to the public in nearby communities. The following locations offer Styrofoam recycling at no charge:
- Abt Electronics
1200 N. Milwaukee Ave., Glenview, IL 60025
Monday - Friday 9 a.m. - 7 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Sunday 10:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.

- Chicago Logistic Service
701 Wesemann Dr., West Dundee, IL 60118

- Dart Container Corporation (two locations)
310 Evergreen Dr., North Aurora, IL 60542
Drop-off bins: 24-hour access; Plant hours: Monday - Friday 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
7575 S Kostner Ave., Chicago, IL 60652

Textile Recycling
Free Collection of Used Textiles and Small Household Items
The Village of Schaumburg offers collection of used textiles and small household items. The service provided by Simple Recycling is free to the village and residents.
How It Works
When cleaning out your closets, collect your old clothing, textiles and other small household items and then schedule a free pickup with Simple Recycling. Free pickups can be scheduled online through Simple Recycling’s website at www.simplerecycling.com or by phone at (866) 835-5068. Then simply fill any bag or box, label it, and place it outside your front door by 7:30 a.m. on the scheduled pickup day.
The textile recycling program does not target clothing donations to charities; rather it is aimed at diverting clothing and home goods placed in curbside trash away from landfills. According to a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) study, more than 84 percent of old clothes, shoes, belts, handbags, and textile items end up in a landfill or an incinerator.
Types of Items Accepted
Simple Recycling will collect a wide range of used textiles and small household items. The list of accepted items includes:
- Used or New Clothing (men’s, women’s, children’s)

Benefits for the Environment
According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), more than 84% of old clothes, shoes, belts, handbags, and textile items end up in a landfill or an incinerator. In fact, the average person in America throws away more than 85 lbs. of textile items each year. Textiles make up more than 6% of all the residential and municipal trash in the US. Clothing and textiles require a lot of resources to make, including water, fertilizer, and pesticides for growing natural fibers like cotton, as well as petroleum to make synthetic fibers. When we reuse and recycle textiles, it conserves the resources used to make them. In fact, collecting one ton of clothing conserves far more than a ton of the resources. The Simple Recycling service is designed to keep those items out of the trash, which is good for the environment.
