The County of Schaumburg, Germany, part of Lower Saxony in northwest Germany, encompasses 260 square miles with 160,000 residents. Early settlers emigrated from the Schaumburg area in Germany to northern Illinois. The capital of Schaumburg County is Stadthagen.
The Village of Schaumburg, Illinois established its Sister Cities relationship with Germany in 1983 through the action of Village President Herb Aigner. In 2018 Village President Al Larson declared a year of celebration in honor of the 35th anniversary of this relationship.
To continue this strong relationship, both Schaumburgs participate in exchanges where elected officials and residents visit and host one another.
