Speed Enforcement
It is the policy of the Schaumburg Police Department to aggressively and equitably enforce all traffic laws and take enforcement action upon the detection of illegal and/or potentially hazardous acts. Enforcement of impaired driving, speeding, distracted driving, and occupant protection and restraint violations are top priority as they are major contributing factors in crashes involving personal injury or death.
The Schaumburg Police Department uses a variety of technology along with data-driven enforcement efforts to address speeding violations.
Technology used includes:
- Speed cameras
- Speed trailers
- Advanced radar technology
- Lidar technology
In 2023, the Schaumburg Police Department enforced the speed limit laws by issuing approximately 3,187 speed-related citations with written warnings.
Traffic Logix Speed Cameras
The Schaumburg Police Department partnered with Traffic Logix and DACRA to evaluate the effectiveness of speed cameras on traffic safety. The purpose of the speed cameras is to collect data in the areas most impacted by speeding vehicles, to identify habitual offenders, and to conduct targeted traffic enforcement using the collected data.
The police department has installed two cameras in residential areas with historically the highest number of speeding complaints and also near school zones. In conjunction with the cameras, the department is implementing an automated written speed warning system where violators will be notified by mail about their speed violation and advised to comply with the posted speed limits.
