If you are planning to install an electric vehicle (EV) charging station on your property, plan review and approval is required before a permit can be issued. All contractors working on the project must obtain a valid Village Contractor’s Business License.

If your project requires excavation, please remember to contact J.U.L.I.E. at 800-892-0123 before digging.

Required Permits and Fees

  • Electrical Permit (Single Family and Multi-Family): **$50
  • If any pavement or curb work will be performed, a miscellaneous pavement permit application is required: **$50
  • **Total permit fee may vary depending on the complete scope of work, an additional electrical fee and land development fee may be added

Submittal Requirements

  • Residential Building Permit 
  • Plat of Survey (PDF), must be a high-res scan, photo will be rejected
  • Electric layout required for all electrical work
  • Parking Lot and Site Maintenance Permit Application
  • Site Plan illustrating the location of the EV charging stations on the lot
  • Cut sheets of the EV charging station
  • Electrical Plan (specify the wire size and type; and conduit size and type)
  • Paving Plan (if required)
  • If your residence is governed by a homeowner’s association, you must submit a Homeowner’s Association Sign-off for any exterior projects
  • If any of the EV charging station equipment is installed in an enclosure, a knox box is required

Required Inspections

  • Electrical Rough-In: After conduit is in place and prior to enclosing concealed raceways
  • Final Electrical: Electrical panel cover removed for observation

Inspections can be scheduled up to 4pm the business day prior to the requested inspection date by contacting the Permitting Division of the Community Development Department at 847-923-4420.


License Requirements

Title 15, Chapter 154 of the Zoning Code requires any person or entity owning or operating an electric vehicle charging station within the Village to obtain and display a valid vending machine license pursuant to Title 11, Chapter 199 of the Village Code.

The Electric Vehicle Charging Station Vending License Application can be submitted via email or the US Postal Service to the Finance Department Collections Division at 101 Schaumburg Court, Schaumburg, IL 60193.

The license period for vending machines is January 1 through December 31. Renewal Season is Nov 1 through December 31 and can be completed online using the village’s WebPay System. Customers are subject to credit card transaction fees. Licenses must be renewed annually. You can renew your license online using WebPay.

  • A separate license is required for each charging station.
  • Separate charging stations bundled together on a stand, support or rack shall have separate licenses.
  • The village must be notified, in writing, if any electric vehicle charging station changes are made during the course of the license year (e.g. charging station additions and/or removals). Please submit notices to Dianna Carlson via email. (dmcarlson@schaumburg.com)
