Residential Roofing, Siding, Air Conditioner, Furnace, Water Heater, Sewer Repair, and Plumbing scope of work requires a permit. However, these residential types of projects do not require a plan review and expedite the permit process.

Temporary Storage Units and New Tenant Occupancy also have an expedited process. See bottom of page for details.


Permit Process

Express permit applications have moved to the  Village of Schaumburg OpenGov permit portal.

You will be asked to create an account to proceed.  

Step 1: Online Permit Submittal

  1. Log into the OpenGov Portal to complete and submit a Residential Express Permit application

Step 2: Intake Review

  1. Permit Clerk reviews each permit submittal for completeness in order of date and time received.
    • Applicants will receive notifications for any action steps throughout the intake review process. 

Step 3: Permit Payment & Issuance

  1. Applicants will receive a notification that payment is due after the intake review is completed
  2. After the permit payment is processed, the Permit Card will be available in the user dashboard on the OpenGov portal.
    • If the applicant is not able to print the card they may come into permit services to have a copy printed for them

Step 4: Inspections

  1. All inspections require a 24 hour minimum advanced notice. 
    • Inspections can be requested through the OpengGov portal. 
    • Inspections can also be scheduled by calling Permit Services at 847-923-4420 before 4 p.m. on the business day prior to the requested inspection date.
  2. The printed permit card must be posted and clearly visible on site to the Inspector.
  3. NOTE: Refer to the applicable Resource Guide for the required inspections for each type of project. 

Residential Air Conditioner Resource Guide

  • Permit Fee: $50
  • Required Inspection: Final

Residential Furnace Resource Guide

  • Installation is per manufacturer’s specifications
  • Permit Fee: $50
  • Required Inspection: Final

Residential Reroof Resource Guide

  • Current copy of the roofing license must be submitted prior to the issuance of the permit.
  • Permit Fee: $50

Residential Siding Resource Guide

Installation of siding, soffits, and gutters qualifies for an Express Permit.

  • Replacing existing gutters does not require a permit
  • Permit Fee: $50
  • Required Inspection:

      • Weather resistant barrier installation
      • Siding installation
    2. Final Siding

Residential Water Heater Resource Guide

  • Current copy of the plumbing license must be submitted prior to the issuance of the permit.
  • A letter of intent is required. The letter shall be written on the licensed plumber of record's business stationery and shall include the license holder's signature and, if the license holder is incorporated, the license holder's corporate seal. If the license holder is not incorporated, the letter must be notarized.
  • Permit Fee: $50
  • Required Inspection:
    1. Rough Plumbing
    2. Final Plumbing

Miscellaneous Electrical Resource Guide

Miscellaneous electrical work for a residence or a business may qualify for an Express Permit.

  • Some residential examples include new wiring or circuits for kitchen appliances, adding circuits, and new lighting loads.
  • Some commercial examples include adding circuits to an existing system, adding light fixtures, and changing amperage devices.
  • Permit Fee:
    • $50: Residential
    • $103: Commercial
  • Required Inspections:
    1. Rough Electrical
    2. Final Electrical

Miscellaneous Plumbing Resource Guide

Miscellaneous plumbing work for a residence or a business may qualify for an Express Permit.

  • Some examples include miscellaneous repairs, code violations, conversion of tub to whirlpool, and an installation of an overhead sewer.
  • Current copy of the plumbing license must be submitted prior to the issuance of the permit.
  • A letter of intent is required. The letter shall be written on the licensed plumber of record's business stationery and shall include the license holder's signature and, if the license holder is incorporated, the license holder's corporate seal. If the license holder is not incorporated, the letter must be notarized.
  • Permit Fee:
    • $35: Plan Review Fee, Plus
      • $12: For Each Fixture
  • Required Inspections:
    1. Rough Plumbing
    2. Final Plumbing

Sewer Repair Resource Guide

Sewer repair work for a residence or a business may qualify for an Express Permit.

  • Current copy of the plumbing license must be submitted prior to the issuance of the permit.
  • A letter of intent is required. The letter shall be written on the licensed plumber of record's business stationery and shall include the license holder's signature and, if the license holder is incorporated, the license holder's corporate seal. If the license holder is not incorporated, the letter must be notarized.
  • Permit Fee:
    • $50: Residential
    • $113: Commercial
  • Required Inspection:
    1. Final


Temporary Storage Unit

Installation of a portable storage unit in a residential district requires a permit.

  • Units are to be located on a paved surface, such as a concrete or asphalt driveway, or a parking lot.
  • The maximum allowed size of a storage unit is 16 feet x 8 feet.
  • Storage units cannot infringe upon the public sidewalk, street, or other property.
  • The number of storage units on a property is determined by the size of the driveway or parking lot on which they are to be placed.
  • If the storage unit(s) are to be located in the common area of a multi-family development, written permission of the property owner or homeowner's association is required prior to the issuance of the permit.
  • No Permit Fee

    2. Pod placement removal

Applying for a Certificate of Occupancy/Business License is an online process in the form of a series of questions regarding the business.
