Earth Hour

Beginning in 2008, the World Wildlife Fund asked individuals, businesses, governments, and organizations around the world to turn off their lights for one hour - Earth Hour - to make a global statement of concern about climate change and to demonstrate their commitment to finding solutions. The Village of Schaumburg Environmental Committee supports participation in this effort to “Turn off and take action.”

Environmental Fair

Every spring, the Environmental Committee partners with Spring Valley Nature Center and Schaumburg Township Library to present an environmental fair with educational programming, activities, and exhibitors from local environmental groups.  The next event will take place in June 2023.

Rain Barrel Initiative

In an effort to promote water conservation and to effectively manage storm water, the Committee offered rain barrels for sale in 2008. Rain Barrels can be purchased by calling Spring Valley Nature Sanctuary at 847.985.2100, or through the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Rain Barrel Program.

Recycling Extravaganza

The Committee sponsors an annual recycling event to celebrate Earth Day. The 2010 and 2012 events were recognized with the Governor's Hometown Award for their success and community participation. The event in 2016 was Schaumburg's most successful with over 1,900 families participating. The event is held at the Wintrust Stadium west parking lot located at 1999 S. Springinsguth Road. The next event will take place in April 2023.  *A fee is charged to recycle paint, televisions and computers.

Other Recycling Events

The Committee promotes and sponsors additional area recycling/collection events for electronics, paint and paper shredding. A paper shredding only event will take place in April 2023 at the Engineering and Public Works building located at 714 S. Plum Grove Road.

An electronics, paint, and paper shredding event will take place from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on October 15, 2021 at the Wintrust Stadium west parking lot located at 1999 S. Springinsguth Road.  *A fee will be charged to recycle paint, televisions and computers.
